Season 1 Episode 3: Dust in a Baggie

Opening Summary

The party’s departure from Highport began with indignity and ended with purpose. Boots fouled with onion sludge served as a crude sendoff, but urgency pushed them forward. Passage north to Darkshelf Quarry was secured aboard the Buxom Gull under Captain Hale, though not without cost. Lacking coin, the group instead became crew, scrambling to gather cargo and prove their worth.

What followed was a journey marked by chaos, unexpected competence, and a growing sense that their destination was more than just a quarry. Something had called them north, and whatever it was, it had already begun to reach back.

The Adventure Unfolds

Negotiations with Captain Hale set the tone. Blunt, transactional, and entirely practical, she agreed to take them north only if they worked the ship and secured cargo to make the trip worthwhile. That sent the party into a hurried flurry of preparation. Supplies were gathered, trade goods acquired, and a map of the Wild Coast purchased to guide what lay ahead.

Life aboard the Buxom Gull proved to be equal parts instruction and survival. Captain Hale ran a tight deck and had little patience for incompetence, though she was not without a certain rough respect for those who tried. By the time the ship reached Safeton, the party had learned just enough to avoid embarrassing themselves too badly.

Safeton itself was as unforgiving as it smelled. There, amid tar, fish, and wary eyes, the party attempted to sell their cargo. Through persistence, confusion, and perhaps a touch of accidental brilliance, they managed to turn a profit. It was not elegant, but it was effective.

The return to sea, however, stripped away any illusion of calm.

Without warning, something rose from beneath the waves.

A massive tentacled creature slammed against the hull, its limbs lashing across the deck with violent force. Wood shuddered, ropes snapped taut, and for a moment it seemed the ship itself might be dragged under. Rai’venen struck quickly, carving into the creature before slipping back into cover, while Chariot unleashed magic that twisted the beast’s perception into terror.

Whatever the creature saw, it broke its will.

With a thunderous strike against the hull, it released a cloud of black ink and fled into the depths, leaving behind a churning stain on the water and a shaken crew.

Curiosity followed danger. Hemorna took to the water in otter form and returned coated in a strange mixture of oily residue and gritty sand. It clung unnaturally, hinting that whatever lurked below was not simply a beast of the sea.

By the time land came into view, the tone had shifted. This was no longer just a journey. It was a lead.

Darkshelf awaited.

Upon arrival, the quarry appeared quiet. Too quiet. Captain Hale, noting their early arrival, pointed them toward the local authority and asked that they inquire about outbound cargo. That authority had a name: Neistor.

The meeting that followed proved to be something entirely unexpected.

Neistor, the overlord of Darkshelf Quarry, was no tyrant in iron halls. Instead, he welcomed the party into his home with a warmth that bordered on disarming. He spoke easily, offered hospitality, and guided them into a well-appointed library that stood in sharp contrast to the harsh labor one would expect from a place like this.

Yet beneath the courtesy lay something sharper.

Neistor listened carefully as Yusef spoke of dreams, visions, and divine purpose. The explanation was strange, even by generous standards, but Neistor did not dismiss it outright. Instead, he engaged with it, probing just enough to understand what stood before him.

Not mercenaries. Not traders. Whether he believed them or simply found them useful remained unclear.

What was clear was this. Neistor allowed them entry, but not freely. The quarry was not open ground. They would need to work through his structure, beginning with Bazili Erak, the foreman who controlled access to the quarry’s inner workings.
